Ultra Refined Follicular Unit Transplantation, is an intricate surgical procedure in which the Victoria Bogart Team are experts. A thin strip of skin comprising the permanent hair is extracted from the donor area. This hair-bearing skin is then divided and the resulting grafts, known as follicular units, are then reimplanted into the thinning or balding areas of the scalp.

At Victora Bogart, we set the world-class standards in FUT due to the immense level of luxury that we provide, and the way we approach the procedure - which guarantees that we consistently carry out superb quality work.

When using the FUT procedure, donor's hair is surgically extracted within a thin strip and the hair follicles on the strip are divided by highly skilled professionals. The resulting incision can be sutured together again, usually creating a fine and narrow, hard to detect scar which is covered by existing hair, even if it is short.

The resulting grafts are identified as follicular units. Excess tissue attached to the graft is eliminated, as failure to do this can result in pitting and/or tenting of the skin, which can lead to an irregular looking hair transplant. The grafts are then carefully implanted in minuscule surgical areas made in the thinning or balding (recipient) areas of the scalp. The size, form, and angle of these injections are key to how the hair transplant will eventually look.

We treat a hair transplant like any other organ transplant in that hair transplant grafts are for all intents and purposes “living organs”. Hence, the time they spend outside of the body must be kept to a minimum to guarantee not only graft endurance but also normal and consistent hair growth following the transplantation.

We accomplish this in two ways, firstly, by taking the donor strip in two separate procedures on the same day, which guarantees the viability of the grafts by minimizing the time out of the scalp. And secondly, as soon as the follicles are separated from the strip, they are reimplanted, again, minimizing the time out of the patient scalp.

And furthermore, our transplant unit consists of a total of 30 people made up of highly skilled hair reconstruction doctors, nurses, and professionals, who are rotated almost every 45 minutes to ensure that the grafts are handled with extreme care and transplanted back into the patient in the most effective and time efficient manner. Refreshing the team in this way prevents fatigue which could potentially result in harm to the grafts during the transplant process.

FUE vs. FUT

An FUE hair transplant involves the removal of individual follicular units from the donor area on the scalp, one by one, using a specially designed blunt-tipped punch tool. This differs from Ultra Refined Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) where a donor-strip-of-skin is taken and the follicular units are dissected from that strip with the aid of a powerful microscope.

The FUE procedure was developed as a result of some patients’ dissatisfaction with the presence of the donor-area-scar on the back of the head. But, with a proper surgical technique, this scar should be virtually invisible.

Both FUE and the FUT procedures have their benefits and drawbacks, some of which are listed below for ease of reading:

- For patients undergoing an FUE procedure ordinarily, the entire scalp needs to be shaved in advance of their procedure, for those undergoing a FUT procedure only the section of hair to be removed is trimmed.

- In an FUE procedure, the graft yield may be lower than with FUT which implies that you may get less donor hair for transplantation. This is because it is not possible to harvest as much hair.

In an FUE procedure, the growth rate of the grafts is often lower as the accuracy of the punch tool used is not as good as a skilled technician using a microscope.

A stitch is required in a FUT procedure, whereas in an FUE procedure, no stitches are needed.

For patients that like to wear their hair very short, FUE may be the preferable option, as the marks resulting from the FUE procedure are less obvious in very short hair as they are more spread out.

Should a patient decide to return for a 2nd or 3rd hair transplant procedure, with the FUT technique a skilled doctor can remove the scar from the patient’s previous surgery, but with the FUE technique this is not possible and new scars will always be created with subsequent surgeries.
